Valentine's Day Engagements and Weddings

Valentine's Day seems to be the perfect day to get engaged or married - love is all around...roses abound. Personally, I did not get engaged or married on a special holiday but I love to hear stories of those who did.

This weekend I attended 11 or maybe 12 weddings on Valentine's Day. Rhodes Hall hosted weddings at their fabulous facility every 15 minutes - I believe they hosted 25 weddings that day in total. It was such a fun day and I wish I could have stayed for every wedding because each couple's story was unique and fascinating. I am writing a separate article about this event with pictures and video so keep an eye out for it!

A few years ago, I went to a wedding reception on Valentine's Day. The actual ceremony was at a church but only family were invited. The reception for friends was just at a local neighborhood pub - no private room or anything. This was a second wedding for both the bride and groom so they chose something small, informal and very sweet. Everyone cheered when they arrived at the pub and it was truly a festive occasion. Lots of impromptu toasts...hugs and smiles all around. The couple looked very happy.

If you got engaged or married on Valentine's Day, please share your story with us.

I got engaged on Christmas eve of 2005. I started with the planning then, but 2 of my family members were struggling with a battle of cancer. Between hospital visits and phone calls of worry, the wedding was the last thing on my mind, and the planning came to a hault. Unfortunatly both of those family members passed away this summer. After the grieving, my fiance then decided that we should start with the plans for the wedding. Financially, we are going to have to pay for this ourselves, so i decided that we need to set a date in the future that will give us time to save money instead of going in to debt for this wedding. We were in St. Louis this past week, talking before we went to bed and we decided to set the date. I let the date be up to him and he decided feb. of 08, but i thought that would be too soon, so he said "the 2nd saturday in Feb." okay, so we have a date, the next day i got on his laptop while we were riding down the interstate to find out what that date was. Feb. 14th, valentines day. My first thoughts were "we are going to have to set a new date", but he was thrilled at the idea, and so now our wedding is going to be on valentines day. Since I am the one who has to make reservations for a wedding and reception site, I have realized how hard it is to find a site open on that date. I mentioned my concerns to him, but he is just so thrilled about the idea of getting married on valentine's day, I can't break his heart. So I will keep looking and hopefully find my perfect ceremony site on his perfect day. If anyone has any suggestions, please e mail me ladycelticbrighid@yahoo.com I am wanting an outdoor wedding site with a lake or pool. It is a very unusual wedding, where we will actually be "on" the water. I know it can be done where we can have clear plasitc about an inch under the water so that we look like we are standing on top of the water. I have seen it done, I just can't find a location to have the ceremony, that is available on his date of valentines day, and something local so our family members will not have to travel long distances to get there. I am looking for a location in or around Rome, GA, or maybe Dallas, or Cedartown or any of the surrounding areas. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

I was surprised on Valentines Day 2006 with a beautiful proposal! When I woke up, we exchanged cards … the norm for us and went to work. He e-mailed me at work mid-day asking if I received anything, which means he sent something that wasn’t going to make it. When I got home from work he apologized for my roses not being deliver. It was ok, it was the thought that counts … I wasn’t expecting roses, he told me early in our relationship that he thinks flowers are over priced and would rather give me something I can enjoy longer then a week. We got dress for dinner and when I made it to the car a Victory Secrets box was waiting for me. The outfit turn out to be to big, which is odd for Mike because he ALWAYS gets my correct size and style. He said, “Baby, I am really sorry it seems like I am just bombing this Valentines Day.” He had the staff at the very elegant restaurant we were eating at that night in on the proposal. After we ate a wonderful dinner and waited for our desert to come out we were having an enjoyable conversation. When the hostess brought out our desert with silver covers over it I still didn’t know what was happening; however, I did wonder why the hostess was bringing it out as well as why our desert had covers but wasn’t going to bring it up in front of them. She set Mike’s desert down in front of him and uncovered it – it was what he order. She placed my desert in front of me and uncovered it – it was not what I order. Instead, it was every women’s dream come true … 100 times better. I saw the silver ring box next to the chocolate something on my plate and immediately started crying. Buy this time Mike was down on one knee, our waitress was taking tons of picture and he asked me to marry him....it was so romantic! The entire restaurant congratulated us! It is one of the happiest memories of my life thus far, and I am excited and thrilled he choice me to be his life partner.

My fiancee proposed to me on Valentine's Day 2003. We are getting married in August of this year, after dating for 3 years. We have known each other since we were 14 & 16, and I have always known that we would get married. Now, 7 years later, we are! We both had to work that night, so I didn't expect anything special. When I woke up, there were roses on my bathroom sink. Now, Wesley ISN'T the romantic type, so that was a lot for him! Then, he called me at work and made a big deal about what restaurant we were going to, and how much he wanted me to enjoy the night. It was all really sweet, but I didn't think much of it. After we were both home and ready, he said he wanted to just hang out for a little while at the house. So I sat down, and he sat on the coffee table, and he brought me a really sweet card, and then he looked at me and told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. Of course, I started tearing up! He started saying all these sweet things about us being perfect for each other, and I was hugging him and almost crying- and then he pulled a black box from his sock!! It was only at that point that I realized he was on one knee and he opened the box and asked me if I would be his wife. I immediately started crying and said "Are you joking?" and he said 'No', so I said 'YES!!!'. He had always freaked out when I brought up anything about marriage, enough that we had squabbled once about me looking at an engagement ring in a jewelry store. Well, it turned out that he went back and bought that ring right after I looked at it, and had been holding onto it since October!! He just didn't want me ever think that he was going to propose, so I would be suprised. I was!! It is one of the happiest memories of my life, and I am just pleased that Wesley and I will be making joyful memories, like that one, for the rest of our lives.

My boyfriend, Darrell, proposed to me on Valentine's Day. He had to work on Valentine's Day., and I prepared a special candlelight dinner for the two of us. He arrived promptly after work. He brought in a box of candy for me (after sending 3 special roses to me at work the day before, one rose for each month we'd dated). He put the heart-shaped box on the coffee table, and we went to the dining room to have dinner. After a very romantic candlelit dinner, he asked if I wanted to eat my Valentine's candy for dessert (totally ignoring my homemade chocolate heart-shaped cake). I said, "Ok, sure." He disappeared into the living room and returned, placing the box in front of me. I started to open it, but he stopped me by saying, "Wait just a minute." I turned to look at him, and he was down on both knees. The sight took my breath away. Before I had time to think, he asked, "Will you marry me?" I gasped and said "Yes." He gathered me into his arms, and then asked, "Don't you want to see the ring?" I said, "Yes." He opened a jeweler's jewelry box that had magically appeared in his hand. The box was empty. He tried to convince me that his 2 year old niece had taken the ring, but I wasn't convinced. He finally directed my attention to the candy box. A Snoopy key ring was attached to the box. Inside the box, Hershey's Kisses replaced the original candy I was unable to eat due to allergies. My engagement ring was buried beneath the kisses. Together we retrieved it, and he placed the ring on my finger. It was an amazingly wondrous Valentine's night.

William and I had dated earlier. But his chivalry and charm was something I couldn't get used to. So I broke it off with him. After 4 years, he contacted a friend of mine who reunited us. We started seeing each other again and just when things seemed to be going great, I was given a promotion to relocate to Georgia. We would be separated again, but visit each other. For Valentine's day, he was scheduled to work. So I went back to my hometown, where he lives. W weren't really going to exchange V-Day gifts, because neither he nor I get into the commercial holidays. For V-day, I decided to take him out to dinner, since he always takes me out. After we finished our meal, the waiter brought my credit card back to me. While I was writing my signature, William had placed a small box on the table. As I was about to open it, he picked up the ring, pulled the chair back from the table, dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He gave a pretty lengthy speech, but I don't remember any of it, because I think I blacked out for the moment. The waiters and waitresses all clapped and applauded. The restaurant gave us free drinks and dessert to celebrate. I was so happy, I couldn't even stand up. I wouldn't take any amount of money in exchange for that day. I am still elated about it and anticipating the day I say "I do" to this wonderful man.

It was about 2 o'clock in the morning when I gave my boyfriend Chris his Valentines gift. Nothing big just a card, a bear, and some sexy lingerie (for me to wear). I knew that he'd totally forgotten abut the day because he was home on r&r from Iraq and it was the first time that we were alone and just hanging out. Well, when I woke up the next morning he was gone. I called him on his cell phone to ask him where he was and he told me it was none of my business. I just dismissed it and told him to hurry home. When he came in I was in the shower and when I walked to the bedroom there was a red bag on the bed. Inside there was a card and a small jewelry box that held a nice diamond heart pendant w/ a necklace. I was excited about my gift and when I thanked him he told me that the rest of my gift was in the car and if I didn't get it it would melt. I told him it wouldn't melt because it was cold outside and that I would get it later. He went down to the car and brought me a box that didn't look like it had a lot of chocolate in it. To my surprise there was another box in it and he took it from me, pulled out a ring that matched my necklace, got down on one knee and popped the question I was so excited that I began to jump up and down causing my towel to fall to the floor. It was the best day of my life, so far!

Joel and I decided to spend Valentine's Day in Cleveland so we could visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I have an obsession with the Beatles and had always wanted to go see the exhibits. While there I became angry with my boyfriend as when I got cold he wouldn't let me wear his coat - looking back, it's easy to see why - the ring was in his jacket! After walking around for a while I sat on a bench near some Beatles posters for a rest. Joel asked if I wanted my Valentine's gift and I said yes. He handed me a book shaped gift. I read the card and then opened the gift. When I peeled back the paper I saw the title of the book was, "Wedding Etiquette." I realized in the split second what was happening and when I looked up Joel was on his knee with this beautiful ring. Of course, I said yes.

This year I went with my boyfriend of 15 months to Vegas for his cousins wedding. It was such a fun wedding, I mean it was in Vegas. Well at the end of the reception with mostly just family remaining, he gets up to give a toast to the bride and groom, or what I thought was just a toast. Turns around to me and says "will you be my valentine?" then gets down on one knee opens a box with the prettiest ring ever and says "will you also be my wife?" it was the sweetest thing, I was so in shock I almost fainted, once I got over being shocked and stopped shaking I said Yes of course. His mom recorded the whole thing so I am very thankful that we have it to watch. I love him so much.

Kenny was insistant that his 17 yr. old son go to dinner with us since his best friend had other plans. So, along with KL, the couple we spent our first Valentine's with, Bob & Marie, and the couple we spent last Valentine's with, Randal & Odette, we went to a great Italian restaurant. Prior to arriving at the restaurant, Kenny and I exchange Valentine's cards which was supposed to be the only gift to celebrate the evening....was I in for a surprise! After the waiter cleaned up the table, Randal orders a glass of champagne for everyone. Yeah, my ring was in my glass. I didn't see it when we toasted the evening but I did see it when I set my glass down. My heart was racing but I didn't say a word. The waiter and owner of the restaurant and the busser where anxiously standing over our table. Bob, Marie, Randal, Odette and KL sat in silence. The anticipation on their faces was just like a MasterCard commercial, "priceless". Marie finally broke the silence when she forcefully suggested that everyone "drink up"! I took another sip of champagne, turned to Kenny and told him I had seen the ring, he exhaled! I poured the remaining champagne into another glass, Kenny pulled the ring, pushed his chair back, dropped to one knee and the rest is history.

Oh fun! I was completely surprised this weekend when my boyfriend of only 14 months proposed. We started dating a little over a year ago and last Valentine's Day was the day we decided that we would be exclusive with each other. Last year he set up a very romantic dinner for me at his house in the mountains - it was very special. This year we went back to the mountains and had almost the exact romantic dinner. He said that last year was so special he wanted to re-create the memory...only this year he made it better :-) Just before dessert we exchanged gifts - and mine was a heart-shaped engagement ring. I can't remember exactly what he said but it was something like "you stole my heart last year on Valentine's Day and now I want you to wear this ring as a symbol of my heart for the rest of your life. Michelle, will you do me the honor of being my wife?" Of course I said yes! He had already asked my parents for their blessing so they already knew. Now we need to set a date and start planning. I found this web site and I am sure we will be using it alot. I AM SO EXCITED! Thanks Lei!

Whew! Where do I start? My boyfriend and I have been dating now for 1 year and a half. We are High School sweetheart's and had been dating for 8 years before I moved to California. He was the one LOVE I was never able to get over, time and distance made me love him even more ( I was gone for 4 yrs). One summer I came back to visit my parents and coincidentally he showed up (my mom had set this up behind my back) we talked, laughed, cried and said goodbye. Later that evening I went out with friends to celebrate a bachelorette party at a night club and low and behold who do I run into? MY LOVE! We spent the night together, and he asked me to come back. I didn't even hesitate, moved all my stuff back here to Chicago. We went through alot because we were expecting to pick up where we left off and because we had grown and matured, things were just not the same. It was rough, we even seperated a couple of times before realizing that there was no one else that could make us feel alive. We are so incredibly happy now and I was NOT expecting this proposal, he had the ring custom made because he said our relationship was just not like any other and that was what the ring should symbolize, Uniqueness. He proposed to me in front of all the patrons in the restaurant we took my mom to dinner at and they were all applauding and congratulating us, it will forever be the happiest moment of my life!
