A Fairy-tale Wedding
Submitted By: Alisa Bittner
I recently attended a wedding where the bride had some fun and unique ideas that I wanted to pass on to our readers.
A Unique Way To Include Children
Lisa was a bride with many friends who had children. She did not want a large wedding party but she did want to make her close friends a part of the joyful event. Rather than a line of bridesmaids, she had her friends' children participate in the ceremony as fairies and ushers. Cute can't come close to describing the wonderful effect the children had on the ceremony.
There were 10 young girls dressed as fairies who participated. The fairies ranged in age from three to 14 years old. The older fairies helped the younger fairies during the wedding.
Each fairy was dressed in her own unique fairy outfit made of scarves, silk and netting materials. Several started as store bought outfits, but a creative seamstress (or Fairy Godmother as we called her) transformed them to be even more whimsical, by sowing flowers and ribbons on them. Then another friend made wings for all of the fairies using wire frames covered with fashion tights.
All of the fairies came to the hotel to get dressed. Their hair was curled, braided and twisted in a variety of ways. Many had bows and ribbons. Finally, fresh flowers were pinned in their hair. A few were glossed with sparkly dust. The older ones wore light makeup. Ten little girls and their mothers crowded in one room were having the time of their lives getting ready.
More Than Just Flower Girls
Before the ceremony the fairies took guests by the hands and walked them to the seating area where ushers helped guests to their seats. The younger ones were a bit confused about walking with the guests.
Then, during the procession, the fairies walked and danced around the bride and her father as they walked down the aisle.
During the ceremony the children held hands and circled around the bride and groom twice while the flutist and violinist played a whimsical duet. They then sat on a large blanket off to the side for the rest of the ceremony. Certainly they did not do as rehearsed perfectly, but that made it even sweeter. Guests were smiling ear to ear!
Even The Rain Couldn't Dampen The Bride's Spirit
It was an outside wedding and yes, it rained as the ceremony was supposed to begin. It rained hard, but only for 10 minutes. The guests found tents and various places for cover. People got wet, but made the best of the situation. But I MUST congratulate the bride who kept her spirits high and laughed that rain was good luck. She even comforted the flower girl who was a bit rattled by the downpour.
After the rain, the sun shined bright again. The ceremony went on and things quickly dried up. The dinner reception was great. No one melted except when they saw the beautiful fairies.
