Wedding Reception Design: Wrapping Paper Table Runner

I am always looking through wedding magazines looking for new and different ideas for weddings. Martha Stewart Weddings magazine never fails to disappoint in the ideas department. One idea in Martha's "Good Things" section of the Spring 2006 issue caught my eye today because although it seems simple enough, it occurred to me that it might be difficult to find suitable materials to really make this idea work.

The idea is a Wrapping Paper Table Runner (click to see on Martha's Web site). To make this you would use gift wrapping paper to make a table runner and to cover the tops of favor boxes. Please see Martha's magazine or Web site for complete instructions.

I agree with Martha that this is an inexpensive way to add style to your reception. In fact the table she has in her picture is absolutely gorgeous. But it also occurred to me that finding suitable wrapping paper for this little project might not be easy - only certain types of papers and patterns would work and those might be hard to find. So I set out to find some options online and here is what I came up with...

During the holidays I tend to buy my gift wrapping supplies at The Container Store because they have a very nice Upscale selection of wrapping papers, bags, ribbons and other wrapping accessories. I know you might not have The Container Store in your city, so I immediately went to their Web site to check out their online selection. The first option I found that might work for Martha's idea is called Pleasing Paisley. I took a picture of it and added a white tablecloth background so you could see what it might look like. Although Martha doesn't use paisley in her picture, you could almost recreate her look with this pattern.

If you are having a more colorful wedding, a pattern called Delight might work for you. Although this pattern could probably work with a variety of colored tablecloths, I added a marigold background as one idea for Spring. If this is too informal for your wedding it could work for a bridal shower or other pre-wedding party.

Here are a few more links to other Web pages with Gift Wrap papers. I have tried to categorize them by type.

Floral Prints

General Patterns and Abstracts One last thing...Martha's idea calls for a Rotary Cutter. You can buy individual Rotary Cutters or Rotary Cutter kits online at Jo-Ann.com.

Finding a wrapping paper similar in quality of design, paper weight and in a roll length is near impossible. Martha's design department must have created the paper shown in their illustration. I checked "bulk paper" websites, local stores and well know paper stores and could not find suitable paper. What we finally purchased was wallpaper off the internet at a discount site for $10.99 per single roll of 16' long for my daughter's wedding reception. I plan on laying an inexpensive protective paper underneath in the event something gets spilled on and the prepasted side is accidentally activated. Just another possible material to use.
