The Grooms Cake

By Lei Lydle

The tradition of the Groom's cake began in the South and was originally a symbol of the couple's sweet life together.

Traditional Cakes

For years the Groom's cake served as a type of favor for guests. It was a dark fruitcake which was baked in advance, cut up into small squares, and put into little monogrammed boxes. The boxes were given to the guests to take home. The time, labor and cost in doing this ultimately led to the virtual end to this tradition.

Modern Cake Designs

Today the Groom's cake really serves as a way for the Groom to have his own special part of the reception or rehearsal dinner. The cake often hints at some aspect of the Groom's personality. If the Groom loves to play golf, the cake may resemble a golf bag. If the Groom is a race car driver, the cake may resemble a race car. If the Groom loves Michael Jordan, the cake may resemble his basketball jersey...I think you get the picture.

In general, the Groom's cake is often a chocolate cake but may be the groom's favorite flavor. If he just loves carrot cake, make it carrot cake. If he just loves cupcakes more than regular cake, make it cupcakes! There is no limit to the design and there is nothing really traditional about it.

Who Orders?

The Bride usually orders the Groom's cake from the same baker who is providing the wedding cake. Unless the Groom was in on the original decision, the Bride usually keeps the design of the cake a secret until the wedding day.

Some Groom's prefer to order the Groom's cake themselves, keeping it a secret from the Bride. Either way, the Groom's cake can be a fun part of the wedding celebration.

When Do We Display the Cake?

Some couples choose to serve the Groom's cake at the Rehearsal Dinner as a dessert because it is often a "less serious" cake than the wedding cake. Other couples choose to display both the wedding cake and the Groom's cake at the wedding, allowing the Groom's cake to serve as another dessert option. Either way, both are acceptable.

Guest Lei Lydle, Editor from Atlanta, Georgia says...
Unfortunately I can't answer your question because the Groom's cake can be purchased by the bride as a surprise for the Groom in which case it should be paid for by bride or bride's family. Or it could be purchased by the Groom as his personal "stamp" on the wedding in which case it should be paid for by the groom or groom's family.

If neither apply, the Groom's Cake is traditionally a part of the Wedding Reception which is typically hosted by the Bride's family. If that is the case here, then it should be paid for by the hosts of the reception unless otherwise discussed by you prior to her making the order.

If the Groom's Cake is making its appearance at the Rehearsal Dinner rather than the Reception (which it sometimes does) then the Groom's parents traditionally host the Rehearsal Dinner and therefore they would pay for it if neither of my previous scenarios apply. I hope this helps! Good luck! ~ Lei

I am making a grooms cake for a horse caretaker this weekend and what i am going to do is make a Bailys Irish Cream cheescake and cover it with fondant (still debating this part)....but for the top decoration I bought some of those collectable horse figurines of a horse reared and ready to attack a cougar (cat) and around this I am going to place some live fern and fake rocks. Since this is for a friend I thought the horse figurines would also be something nice to keep as a keepsake. You can usually find these in Walmart toy department for around $10-20.....depending on how elborate you go. Hope this helps!

I need some ideas from anyone please!! My fiance is an avid baseball fan, as well as am I. He proposed to me at a Texas Rangers baseball game. I wanted his groom's cake to have a baseball theme, and possibly even be a replica of the Rangers Stadium, with one of the pictures taken of us to be the picture from the "Jumbo-Tron". My concern is that I don't want it to look juvenile, like a 5 year olds birthday cake. Any Ideas?!?!?

To everyone out there searching for that perfect cake...my heart goes out to you. This should be as stress-free as possible. I have made cakes on the side for 18 years and have so many ideas for so many of you. For all of you looking for hunting, fishing, fireman, police, military, tiger, jeeps, sports and computer themes, I wish I could help. Wilton has a great site and has so many of these pans already. All you have to do is use your creativity and embellish them. Find a friend or family member or someone in your area that has baked cakes for a long time. Usually, where there are cake baking lessons, there's an instuctor that bakes on the side. Michael's, JC Penney's, Hobby Lobby stores, etc. It's a good start at a fraction of the cost. Blessings to you. ezfood2go4u@sbcglobal.net

I would think for a computer cake, something easy would be a lab-top. It could be a simple sheet cake with the logo of whatever computer brand he prefers... Another idea, i think sports logos are a good idea. You can be creative as you want - cake in the shape of a football, or mascot of the team - or as simple as you want just putting the logo for the team on a sheet cake.

Guest Bonnie Engstrom from Newport Beach, CA says...
I ordered the groom's cake as a surprise for my son-in-law-to-be. He is a MAJOR Anaheim Angels fan, so his cake was his green sofa with his blackand white cats reclining on it, an Angels baseball cap and his remote control. He loved it so much he wouldn't let us cut it. It was brought to the day after brunch (partially collapsed) and mostly consumed. The phots I have of it are priceless. My advice: be creative, find the BEST baker, take several ideas, preferably photos or drawings. We originally had thought about doing a cake of his Beagle because he wanted his dog at the wedding, but that got too complicated. The sofa with his Angels hat was a hit.

Guest Tonya from Parsons, KS says...
I got the idea while watching M'Lynn freak out about Jacksons bleeding armadillo grooms cake on Steel Magnolias. My Fiance is an avid fisherman so I was thinking about getting a Red Velvet cake in the shape of a bass fish, with nasty green and gray scaly icing on it.

We're using cheesecakes for our grooms cake. Will probably use three different varieties, displayed at varying heights with different toppings on each, like fresh fruit and chocolate!

My husband didn't want a cake...He wanted cookies. So that is what he got. We made chocolate chip, peanut butter, and sugar cookies and had them on a tiered serving dish. I think cookies are a great alternative to a cake, plus no one has to be there to serve them.

My fiance' doesn't like cake. His favorite dessert is bread pudding, so I am having a large pan of bread pudding made by one of his favorite restaurants. The groom's cake is for him so; why not use his favorite dessert. He doesn’t like cake and I don't like bread pudding so; it’s a nice compromise for both of us. We both get what we want.

The Groom's Cake I grew up with, is.... a small piece of spice or carrot cake... wrapped up in a piece of foil, then wrapped in tulle and tied with the color of the wedding party... they are displayed in a large decorated basket, all the guests take one as they leave and put them under their pillow that night and say a prayer for the newly married couple... it's never eaten.. but always kept... a cool tradition that I am trying to bring back... My fiance is an alum of LSU so I wanted a groom's cake that reflects his love of their football team. Our baker & I decided to have a groom's cake in the shape of the Tiger Stadium!!! Best of all, my fiance has absolutely no idea. He thinks the cake is just going to be a sheet cake in the shape of a football field. Little does he know that cake will be 3-D & stand about 1 foot tall!!
