Real Destination Wedding: Stephanie and Brad's Weekend Party in Puerto Rico

4/4/2011 2:22:44 PM ~ Posted By Zoomworks

Stephanie and Brad met through mutual friends in New York City.  They chose Puerto Rico as their wedding location because they wanted their wedding to be a weekend party for their friends and family and as laid back as possible. The island offered something for everyone and Old San Juan evoked a whimsical feeling that they thought their guests would remember forever.   Stephanie loves vibrant colors so they tried to really make the party pop with cool green flowers and lush raspberry colored tablecloths.

I just got this news about this awesome contest to win a wedding in Gatlinburg!  So fun!  Gatlinburg is a beautiful town in the Smokies - perfect for anyone who is looking for a mountain setting for their big day.  The following information is from the press release they sent me:

Gatlinburg launches contest to let  couples compete for a free Gatlinburg wedding.

The Gatlinburg Department of Tourism is giving couples the chance to win  the ultimate wedding or vow renewal in Gatlinburg.  Contestants are  invited to submit their stories online and explain why they should be selected  as the couple to visit Gatlinburg and compete alongside three other couples to  win the ultimate Gatlinburg wedding.

The four winning couples will travel to  Gatlinburg to compete in a wedding-style scavenger hunt awarding the first  couple to cross the finish line with the ultimate wedding package.   Couples will be asked to move from location to location following clues  provided at each check point.  Activities include ziplining in their  wedding attire to receive the next clue, a no-hands allowed wedding cake eating  contest or a hike through the mountains to a chapel.  The first, second  and third runners up will also win wedding packages.

“Many people are unaware of all the  resources Gatlinburg has to offer for weddings and vow renewal ceremonies,”  said David Perella, Executive Director for the Gatlinburg Department of  Tourism.  “Gatlinburg has everything any couple could need to plan their  ceremony all within the city limits.  This contest will not only show the  couples what is available but also be a fun way for them to experience all that  Gatlinburg has to offer.”

The contest online submission portion  begins on Valentine’s Day and will run through mid-March.  During this  time period submissions will be collected and judged to determine the four  finalist couples who will come to Gatlinburg for the competition portion of the  contest.  The race to the ultimate Gatlinburg wedding will occur in  April.  To enter, contestants can visit www.facebook.com/gatlinburgtn and click the contests tab.

Romantic New Orleans

2/22/2011 3:18:12 PM ~ Posted By Linda Holloway, Holloway Productions

Romantic New Orleans

Honeymoon in one of the most romantic cities in the world where European traditions blend with Caribbean influences. You will find the night crowds on Bourbon Street exhilarating, yet holding hands down centuries old Pirate’s Alley is perfect for intimacy. Here, the chefs are famous, and it is okay to sing the blues. Film producers seek this address, and you are just as likely to spot a film star here as in Hollywood. Celebrated for its uniqueness and resilience, New Orleans, Louisiana, is romance central.

Hotel Monteleone

Romantic New Orleans

When my husband and I first stepped off Royal Street into the Grand Lobby of the AAA Four Diamond Hotel Monteleone, we were not disappointed. Luxury prevailed from the opulent crystal chandelier to the famous clock. The hotel has recently undergone a $70 million restoration that extended to suites decorated with lush fabrics, plush bedding, and granite and marble bathrooms.

Romantic New Orleans

The Monteleone family has welcomed guests to this designated Historic Hotel of America since 1886. Monteleone is one of only three U.S. hotels to receive the prestigious Literary Landmark designation by the Friends of Libraries, USA. Many of our favorite authors such as William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty and Truman Capote have lodged here and written about the hotel using it as settings for their stories or novels.

The Vieux Carre Suites are popular, but for a literal “over the top experience,” reserve the Ernest Hemmingway Penthouse Suite. After 10:00 p.m., swing open your balcony door and the hotel’s heated rooftop pool is steps from your bed—exclusively for the two of you. A cozy retreat within the Monteleone, Spa Aria, uses world-renown products from Pevonia. Enjoy the “Couples Treatment” that comes with champagne and chocolates. Celebrating 61 years, the hotel’s famous Carousel Bar is the only bar in New Orleans that revolves around the room. The bar was transformed into a clothing store in the film, Double Jeopardy, starring Ashley Judd and Tommie Lee Jones.

You may never see the 17th floor of the hotel unless you have just gotten married. Monteleone is a popular venue to exchange vows. After the ceremony, the bride and groom are whisked away by private elevator to the 17th floor rooftop where a table set for two is waiting in the shadow of the famous Monteleone sign. Here, newlyweds have their photos taken and champagne is served before the reception begins. The hotel was recognized by Fodor’s Travel as a “Best Destination Wedding Hotel in the U.S.,” and was previously awarded “Best Romantic Hotel” by Citysearch.

Exploring The French Quarter and Beyond

Romantic New Orleans

Romantic New Orleans

Explore the French Quarter on slate sidewalks along Royal Street where balconies with hanging baskets decorate buildings dating back to the 1700’s. Stop by the Historic
New Orleans Collection and learn the storied past of the city and spend some time in their lush courtyard—a French Quarter trademark. Zip in and out of some of the finest antique and art galleries in the world. Take time to enjoy the street musicians, and detour along Pirate’s Alley to the Faulkner House bookstore to see where the author penned his first novel.

Head for Jackson Square, the location of an outdoor artist colony, and have your own portrait drawn for a lasting memento. This is where you can embark on a romantic carriage ride through the French Quarter. Directly across from Jackson Square, visit Café du Monde where coffee and beignets have been served since 1862. Take time to shop at the open-air French Market for carnival masks, jewelry, arts, crafts and voodoo dolls. A few blocks away, board a steamboat for a cruise down the Mississippi.

Leave the French Quarter by boarding the St. Charles Avenue streetcar to the stately mansions and shops of the Garden District where author Anne Rice previously resided. For artsy and eclectic stores, find the perfect item for your new home along the 39-block strip of Magazine Street. Lastly, check out the tours in the Big Easy, such as a ghost tour, or brave the bayou for a swamp tour.

Night Moves

New Orleans is known as the birthplace of jazz and you can be entertained by Grammy award-winning artist Irvin Mayfield at his acclaimed club, Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse. Located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel, you will find a variety of performers, and Irvin Mayfield is featured on Wednesdays. Another favorite is Arnaud’s Jazz Bristo, and don’t forget the sing-a-longs at Pat O’Brien’s.

Romantic Dining

Romantic New Orleans

Romantic New Orleans

New Orleans is a foodie’s paradise where couples can mix romance and the best food on the planet. While there are dozens of restaurants to choose from, there are three that you must try. “Breakfast at Brennan’s” is a pop icon phrase known around the world. A Brennan’s breakfast must not be rushed so that you can savor not only the unforgettable cuisine, but the entire Brennan’s experience. Be sure to ask for a corner patio table for privacy. Our favorite menu items include turtle soup, Egg Hussarde, Shrimp Remoulade and last, the famous Bananas Foster—a Brennan’s creation. The Crepes Fitzgerald is a close second, and the excitement of both dishes being flamed tableside in rum is almost as much fun as eating it. Harry Connick Jr., Nicholas Cage and Anthony Hopkins have noted Brennan’s as their favorite restaurant.

For an evening of fine dining, we reserved a table in the Wine Room at Restaurant August. The restaurant is located in a French-Creole building dating from the 1800’s where John Besh is known around the U.S. for his delectable dishes. Besh has been honoree by Food & Wine (“Top 10 Best New Chefs in America”) and the James Beard Foundation named Besh (Best Chef-Southeast.) We enjoyed the Five Course Tasting Menu beginning with Cane Glazed Pork Belly and finished with Valrhona Chocolate with salted toffee ice cream—an unforgettable meal.

Boasting patrons from numerous U.S. Presidents, royalty and celebrities, the legendary Arnaud’s Restaurant has been a New Orleans tradition since 1918. With the classic elegant chandeliers, tiled floor, and tuxedo-clad waitstaff, the main dining room is vintage New Orleans. Ask for the table where Benjamin (Brad Pitt) and Daisy (Cate Blanchett) dined on their first date in the film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Brad and Angelina have dined here as well. Savor the scrumptious Shrimp Arnaud, Filet Mignon Charlemond and finish with Praline Crepes.

Touring Romantic River Road

Stretching from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, the 80 mile River Road winds along the Mississippi River revealing architectural gems of the past when sugar was king and wealth was displayed in grand mansions. Add River Road to your New Orleans itinerary, or extend your honeymoon overnight. On weekends, as the last tour is completed, you will witness the event teams at Oak Alley, Houmas House and Bocage busily preparing for weddings.

Oak Alley Plantation

Romantic New Orleans

Known for the breathtaking one-quarter mile alley of 300-year-old live oak trees, Oak Alley was built for Jacques Roman, a wealthy sugar planter in 1839. The double row of oaks was planted in the early 1700’s. Oak Alley’s 28 massive columns, matching the number of trees, is pure Greek Revival architecture excellence. While the house tour is spectacular, romance lies underneath the majestic oaks in the cool of the afternoon. “Interview with a Vampire” was filmed in part here, as well as an episode of the television show “Ace of Cakes.”

Houmas House Plantation and Gardens

Romantic New Orleans

Enter a time warp of gentility and elegance at Houmas House Plantation. With a storied past dating the original structure to the 1770’s, the present structure was built in the late 1820’s. The best remembered owner, John Burnside, purchased the estate in 1858, and he was known as “The Sugar Prince of Louisiana.” He became the largest sugar planter in America. Our guide pointed out a rare 1847 map of Louisiana, the Houmas China, and a French mantle clock—made in Paris and reputed to have been acquired by Napoleon from the estate of Marie Antoinette. We enjoyed a romantic evening of dining at Latil’s Landing, located in the original 1770’s structure overlooking the fountain and gardens.

We witnessed the wedding of Shelly Stuart and Derrick Payne in front of Houmas House. This picture perfect setting comes complete with swaying Spanish moss dangling from centuries old live oak trees. The good news is Houmas House newlyweds can lodge onsite at the Honeymoon Cottage—a few steps from the main house. Visionary owner, Kevin Kelly, noted there has been a surge in destination weddings, with couples traveling across the U.S. to be married at Houmas House. Wedding receptions spill out onto the lush tropical gardens adorned with ponds, fountains, statuary, courtyards and a scenic bridge.

Hollywood found Houmas House in 1964, when featured in the classic Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte. Recently, Love, Wedding, Marriage starring Jane Seymour, Mandy Moore, and James Brolin, and Revenge of the Bridesmaids, starring Raven Symone, was filmed at Houmas House.

Bocage Plantation

Romantic New Orleans

Originally built in 1801, Bocage was a wedding gift from Marius Brinier, to his daughter Fanny. The original Creole Cottage burned and the Greek Revival structure in existence today was designed by famous architect James Dakin and built in 1837. Bocage was opened as a Bed & Breakfast in 2009, and daily tours are available. After lying dormant for several decades, Dr. Marion Rundell purchased Bocage and restoration was begun in 2008. We slept in an antique bed by Prudent Mallard in the Bringier Red Room and the Blue Room has a bed by C. Lee. Both rooms have access to the balcony through 12-foot windows. Other fine antiques furnishings include names such as Belter and Meeks that are usually reserved for the finest house museums. Also, notice the exquisite paintings by Rembrandt, Peale and Thomas Sully. Fit for a prince and princess, our breakfast was served on fine china in the Napoleon inspired dining room.

Bocage Plantation is steeped in history with ties to Christopher Columbus, early colonization, and the Louisiana Purchase. Well documented in many books and used as a Hollywood set, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Karen Kingsley, writes in her book, Buildings of Louisiana, "Certainly Ashland-Belle Helene and Bocage achieve an austere purity of form that places them among the best and, in the case of Bocage, the most original interpretations of American Greek Revival style in the nation."

We fell in love with the treasures of River Road years ago…a place so addictively romantic that a warning sign is needed stating “One visit will never be enough.” The epic landscapes of River Road and the rhythm of New Orleans are always on our mind.

Honeymoon in the Heart of St. Augustine, Florida

8/1/2010 10:15:49 PM ~ Posted By Linda Holloway, Holloway Productions

Casa Monica Hotel St. Augustine Florida

Plan your honeymoon where love is legendary in the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida. The Ancient City's first wedding is recorded January 24, 1594, between Gabriel Hernandez and his bride, Catalina de Valdes. The city's allure has survived throughout the centuries. Explore the intriguing tales from the pages of history while surrounded by romantic architecture and fine art. It is only natural that you begin your new life in a place where time has stood still…well almost.

Casa Monica Hotel

With its red tile roof and five towers rising out of the historic district, my husband and I easily located our luxury refuge, the Casa Monica Hotel. Built in 1888, the 138-room Moorish revival castle is fit for royalty. In fact, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain lodged at this AAA Four-Diamond property on a previous visit. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, we were not surprised to enter through the original arched carriage entrance.

Once inside the lobby, a flowing bronze fountain surrounded by Italian tile and hand-painted stenciled gold-leafed archways welcomed us. Lavish antique chandeliers and furniture complimented by velvet and lush tapestry and fine art completed the ambiance. Notice the large European mid-17th century oak chest with winged lions and supported on paw feet. The good news-the romantic atmosphere extends to the hotel suites.

Make sure you reserve one of the signature suites with chic Spanish-Moorish décor and ask about the Romance Package. The spacious Anastasia Suite was our favorite-complete with a spiral staircase. For sweeping views of the city, reserve the Ponce de Leon Suite that comes with a Jacuzzi. Come morning, the hotel will provide transportation to visit the Serenata Beach Club-located just minutes away. Guests have access to this private oceanfront club with dining, adult pool and the Atlantic Ocean for a playground.

Casa Monica is not only a hot honeymoon destination, but the ultimate setting for weddings. With lush landscape of tropical palms and flowing fountains, couples can choose from indoor and outdoor venues, including poolside terrace, the Flagler Ballroom or the grand Casa Monica Ballroom. Frequently, newlyweds can be seen exiting their wedding by horse-drawn carriage through the streets of St. Augustine.

Try the gourmet cuisine at the hotel's award-winning 95 Cordova, and enjoy the breakfast sandwiches on croissants at Café Cordova. Casa Monica has previously been tagged on Travel + Leisure's "World's Best" hotel awards list. Owned by the Kessler Collection, the hotel recently became the first property to become part of the Autograph Collection, Marriott's newest brand featuring iconic independent hotels and resorts.

Romance, History, Architecture and Art

St. Augustine Florida

Adjoining the Casa Monica's lobby, we explored the James Coleman Signature Gallery. Our favorite painting by the nationally acclaimed Coleman was "Together" depicting two swans painted for his wife. Why swans? They mate for life. At Loves' Art Emporium, enjoy the paintings by husband and wife team, Michael and Inessa Garmash. The Romantic Impressionist artists paint together and often finish each others paintings. Stroll the city's oldest street and enjoy the Aviles Street Gallery, where more than 20 local artist shops reside. We spent the entire afternoon on St. George Street exploring dozens of unique shops.

Railroad magnate, Henry Flagler, purchased Casa Monica in 1892. Just steps from the hotel you will want to learn…the rest of the story by touring two other former Flagler hotels, the Lightner Museum, former Alcazar Hotel, and Flagler College, the former Ponce de Leon Hotel. After honeymooning in St. Augustine, Flagler fell in love with the city and set out to build opulent hotels for the rich and famous to escape from harsh northern winters. Flagler's dream of building the "American Riviera" in St. Augustine became a reality.

The Lightner Museum and Flagler College is dripping in romantic architecture and treasures from the Gilded Age. Promptly at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the Lightner Museum docents will demonstrate the rare musical instruments such as the cylinder music box. This collection of art and antiques is amazing in a place that is often referred to as the Smithsonian of the South. Legacy Tours of Flagler College begin in the Rotunda where you are directed to look up into the 80-foot domed ceiling-notice the robed women copied from the temple of Diana in Greece. Ponce de Leon guests lodged for the three months at this opulent hotel that is now a liberal arts college. The tour also includes viewing 79 of Louis Tiffany's stained glass windows, crystal chandeliers, and an onyx Thomas Edison clock.

Set out on the Old Town Trolley Tours, a fully narrated seven mile historical tour of St. Augustine. A three-day pass includes unlimited on/off use of the trolley, which makes 21 stops, including the Oldest Wooden School, the Oldest House in the U.S., and the impressive Spanish Fort Castillo de San Marcos. Also, depart at the famed Fountain of Youth, a national archaeological park-where Ponce de Leon dropped by in 1513 to claim the spot for Spain. The guide will have a cup of the "timeless" water waiting on you. Stop long enough to kiss under the "Love Tree" on Cordova Street, and visit the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, where you can climb 219 steps for spectacular views. Reserve your space at the top of this historic working lighthouse at the Sunset/Moonrise viewing events, complete with champagne toast and light refreshments.

Romantic Dining

For an unforgettable dining experience in an intimate setting, try the award-winning Opus 39. The talented chef and owner, Michael McMillan, an established star in the culinary field, founded this cutting edge restaurant on the premise that only the freshest ingredients are good enough. The results-tantalizing cuisine surrounded by New York chic décor. For the best samplings that Chef Michael has to offer, try the Chef's Seven Course Tasting Menu. We began with White Wine Steamed Mussels and finished with Date Molasses Cake. Ask for a table by the window, overlooking the historic district. The atmosphere was so cozy that we lingered long after our meal was finished. Here, the soft glow of the candle cast shadows on two people in love. We walked back to Casa Monica under the sky lit by a thousand stars with our memories tucked away for safekeeping.

Evening in Jacksonville and Day Tripping to Walt Disney World

While St. Augustine is your ideal honeymoon base camp, the city is also ideally situated for excursions to a city that rocks-especially when the sun goes down. You will also want to take a day trip where two famous sweethearts reside. Can you say "Minnie and Mickey?"

Downtown Jacksonville, Florida

Take a late afternoon drive to Jacksonville, Florida. Located just 45 minutes from St. Augustine, this seaport city is the hip place for newlyweds. Romance begins at Friendship Fountain-a great place to view the metropolitan skyline. Along the St. Johns River, we found riverside restaurants, shops, nightlife hotspots, theaters and galleries. Bistro AIX Restaurant on San Marco Boulevard provided us with culinary delights in an atmosphere that included curved banquetts. James Beard Award semifinalist, Chef Tom Gray's approach to seasonal Mediterranean and French bistro-inspired menu includes grilled tuna over whipped potatoes, with baby spinach and lemon-garlic butter. The restaurant is also a great place for spotting celebrities - Bistro AIX is Sharon Stone's favorite dining spot in Jacksonville.

Travel two hours from St. Augustine for a day trip to Walt Disney World. Pick one of the four WDW theme parks to explore, and remember "the happiest place on earth" is also for adults. Below are some great places to steal a kiss and our favorite restaurants in each of Walt Disney World's 4 theme parks.

Magic Kingdom: Kiss under Cinderella Castle breezeway and enjoy an evening of fine dining at Citricos located at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa (just a monorail away). Walk over to Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding Pavilion grounds for a kiss under arched hedge. Epcot: Kiss at the end of IllumiNations fireworks and dine at the most romantic restaurant in Epcot, Bistro de Paris in France. Disney's Hollywood Studios: Kiss in the Great Movie Ride-reminisce with the classic film clips, and dine at Sci Fi Dine-In Theater where you sit in vintage convertibles and watch Sci Fi films. Disney's Animal Kingdom: Follow the secret path between Asia and Africa and kiss near the waterfalls-dine at Sanaa, at Kidani Village Resort and watch the giraffes, zebras and other exotic animals roam the savannah. For the number one big splurge: Reserve the entire Grand Floridian's Grand I, an elegant 52-foot yacht, for a stunning view of "Wishes" fireworks. The captain will cruise you around the Seven Seas Lagoon complete with champagne and roses.

After a day at Walt Disney World, the friendly staff welcomed us back to the Casa Monica where our comfy bed was waiting. On our last day in St. Augustine, we took one last walk around the plaza where Flagler's stone legends still stand. It was sad to say goodbye to a place that had become part of our continuing love story, but the city with the Old World charm will be on our "A" list for an anniversary visit.

Romancing the Green - Unite Exotic Adventure and Eco Friendly with a Green Honeymoon

5/4/2009 12:27:06 PM ~ Posted By Margo Malcolm

Green Weddings and Honeymoons

Golfo Dulce – Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica – Costa Rica’s Pacific coast has been described by National Geographic Magazine as ‘the most biologically intense place on earth.’ This Eden-like setting is an idyllic, remote location for a romantic and adventurous honeymoon and a perfect spot to make it a Green one where you can not only unite two hearts into one, but also show your desire for working together towards a more sustainable planet.

Green Weddings and Honeymoons

Imagine hiking with your new partner to a secluded swimming hole with a cascading waterfall in the rainforest? Or peacefully kayaking in one of only four tropical fjords in the world? The Golfo Dulce, or the Sweet Gulf, off the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica offers a unique opportunity for both a beach and a rainforest honeymoon in one location. The gulf is surrounded by protected rainforest preserves, national parks, biological corridors and sanctuaries with hiking trails and a myriad of wildlife easily viewed wildlife.

A Dream Honeymoon

Green Weddings and Honeymoons

Though teeming with natural beauty, the Osa Peninsula is still far enough off the beaten track so you’ll not be surrounded by hordes of other travelers. Most resorts are accessible only by boat. One such resort, Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge, has the tranquil waters and unspoiled beaches of the gulf at its front door, and its 165-acre rainforest preserve and the lush Piedras Blancas National Park out back. If you’re looking for a private escape for your adventurous honeymoon, this may be the place for you.

The small size of Playa Nicuesa allows for an intimate experience with nature. Its cabins, guestrooms and the main lodge are uniquely designed to create a seamless and enjoyable transition between the indoors and outdoors. The lodge’s five cabins are all very private and great for couples seeking unique accommodation, including a special garden open air shower surrounded by nature.

Playa Nicuesa’s honeymoon package offers intimate rainforest cabins, aromatherapy massages, and candlelit dinners on the lodge’s rainforest terrace, and a selection of adventure activities, such as a private hike with a naturalist guide to a hidden waterfall, kayaking, mangrove river tours, snorkeling, fishing and bird watching. The package includes meals with an emphasis on local cuisine and fresh fish, tropical fruits and vegetables. If you want a little more room, a Cabin Suite is yours for the asking.

Playa Nicuesa’s green philosophy stands out. They understand the fragility and value of the beauty and nature that surrounds them, and have adopted strong environmental practices and policies. They practice sustainable, low-emission living and have adopted carbon neutrality as a way of life.

Their conservation program protects 95 per cent of its 65 hectare (165 acres) rainforest property in an undeveloped and natural condition. They also use clean energy powered by solar panels to run the majority of the lodge’s electrical service, and candles are used throughout the lodge to maintain the natural experience.

Playa Nicuesa Lodge has also earned a FONAFIFO (Costa Rica’s official carbon credits foundation) certification for offsetting their use of fossil fuel by purchasing carbon credits and has begun the official process to be certified a Carbon Neutral Business. Guests can offset the carbon footprints from their flights to Costa Rica by purchasing carbon credits with FONAFIFO that will be used to reforest and preserve the Golfo Dulce/Osa Peninsula.

Honeymoon couples can also plant their own hardwood tree to symbolize their start of their own marriage and contribute to the lodges Osa Peninsula conservation program that donated $10,000 to the Nature Conservancy last year. A perfect combination for romancing the green.

Green Weddings and Honeymoons

Playa Nicuesa also offers special rates to rent the entire lodge, if you are looking for a wedding venue. This option includes a nature guides, chef, boat captain and housekeeping, as well as unlimited use of preserve trails, kayaks, windsurfers, snorkeling equipment and fishing gear. The lodge can accommodate 22 guests.

If you want to go off on our own adventure the lodge will set you up with a delicious packed lunch, a bottle of wine and some snorkeling equipment to put in your kayak and go off for a day of exploring private beaches and snorkeling spots.

Green Weddings and Honeymoons

The Golfo Dulce

Corcovado National Park, Piedras Blancas National Park, and private reserves create a protected biological corridor around the gulf, and an extraordinary large trail system for hiking and exploring the incredibly bio-diverse rainforest. The region is only accessible by boat, so you know you’ll be able to experience nature intact complete with howler monkeys, over 250 types of birds including toucans and parrots, butterflies, coati, iguanas, lizards, tree frogs and much more.

Golfo Dulce, protected from the open Pacific by the Osa Peninsula, is home to groups of whales and at least three types of dolphins, as well as sea turtles, sea birds and other marine life. The gulf, the tenth deepest in the world, is a great place for kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, windsurfing, sailing or surfing. Its tranquil waters are pleasant for sailing and windsurfing, and excellent for snorkeling and fishing. The lodge has its own boats and local guides to take you out for a variety of tours including a private sunset boat tour of the Gulf or a variety of fishing trips.

The Golfo Dulce and Playa Nicuesa Lodge are a perfect combination for romancing the green.

The Romantic Charms of Charleston

Charleston Cariage Rides

Imagine a place that has been waiting for three centuries to provide the backdrop of your first days of forever. Here you can wander through narrow cobblestone streets leading to stately antebellum mansions and Revolutionary War structures-still intact. Come dusk, board a private horse drawn carriage where the driver guides the clip-clopping horses along side streets. Romance begins here where dancing flames from gas lit lanterns cast your silhouettes onto the facades of time-treasured icons. You have arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, a city where history and romance are intertwined to celebrate your marriage.

Charleston Gas Lanterns
Charleston Place Hotel

For sophisticated couples, Charleston Place Hotel, an Orient-Express Hotel, is the lodging of choice where you can step out the lobby door and into the heart of Charleston's historic district. The staff's reputation for Southern hospitality has a history of attracting notable guests such as Kristi Yamaguchi, Jude Law, Richard Gere, Oprah Winfrey, and Heath Ledger. Prince Charles has also graced the hotel that has a feeling of a grand 17th century residence. Ranked among the "Top 10 Hotels in North America" by Conde' Nast Traveler, you will find opulence in every detail from the Italian marble lobby, with its signature Georgian Open Arm staircase and 12-foot crystal chandelier, to the suites where fine furnishings and posh linens are standard. Bride's Magazine also tagged the hotel as one of the world's top ten honeymoon destinations.

Charleston Place Hotel Staircase

From the moment we stepped into our room, until the dreaded checkout time, romance flourished in an atmosphere of upscale amenities. The Luxury Honeymoon Package has a bevy of perks including a bouquet of long stemmed roses, a private carriage tour of the city and a three-course dinner at the famed Charleston Grill. The most romantic amenity happened after dark when my husband gave the cue for the "romance guru" to visit while we were dining. Returning to our suite, we found dozens of tea light candles piercing the darkness. There was just enough light to follow the path of hundreds of rose petals strewn around the bed where a bottle of chilled champagne was surrounded by candles on a table overlooking Charleston's night skyscape. The path extended to the bathroom where the scent from the floating rose petals escaped the steamy bath that had just been drawn for us. On that spring night, the world ceased to exist outside suite #739.

For relaxation, try The Spa at Charleston Place, recently named "Best City Hotel Spa" in North America by readers of Travel & Leisure Magazine. Be sure to request the Couple's Massage that relieves any left-over pre-wedding stress. Among the menu of world-class services includes the Diamond Radiance Facial offered exclusively at The Spa at Charleston Place. Treat your face to 80 minutes of pampering where the light-reflecting diamond particles instantly makes your skin softer and smoother. You are now ready to sample the suburb cuisine in a city that was voted a "Top Food Destination" in 2007 by Travelocity.com. Over four evenings we dined at local restaurants that served delicious fare in a romantic atmosphere. With visitors clamoring to experience Charleston's unique cuisine, you will want to make reservations.

Located in Charleston Place Hotel, Charleston Grill has won almost every award in the restaurant world including the Mobil Four-Star Dining Award and AAA Four-Diamond Award. The soft and sensual sounds of a jazz trio, combined with the warmth of rich paneled walls and banquettes, evoke an ambiance that spells love. The famous Chef Bob Waggoner conjures up Southern, French and Contemporary cuisines using fresh local produce, seafood and game. Chef Bob added panache to our favorite delights from the sea-Diver Scallops with Lobster Risotto and She Crab Soup. Chef Waggoner has appeared on a variety of national media outlets such as The Food Television Network. (843) 577-4522

If you like your steaks thick and juicy, try Oak Steakhouse located within an elegant 1850's former bank. Be sure to ask for the most romantic spot-the middle window table on the third floor overlooking the city. Here you will find drapes so lush, that Scarlet O'Hara, just like in the movie, could rip them down and make a fancy dress. We shared one of the famous wood-fired 36-ounce ribeye steaks. Chef Brett McKee finished us off with a generations-old family recipe, "Brett's Mother's Cheesecake." (843) 722-4220

Tristan is an upscale restaurant that boasts a AAA Four-Diamond rating. The menu is bold American with a global influence. With an atmosphere of sophistication, the interior is chic and contemporary complete with shimmering gossamer curtains draping the entire room. The open-kitchen offers continuous live culinary theatrics and delivers delectable cuisine. Executive Chef Aaron Deal tempted our palate with a house favorite, Organic Irish Salmon. Hungry? Try the Tasting Menu. (843) 534-2155

Private Gardens in Charleston

Any season is good for honeymooning in Charleston, but if you are lucky enough to visit in the spring, the Historic Charleston Foundation has a treat for you. Renowned for three centuries as "a city set in a garden", the annual Festival of Houses and Gardens invites you to peek beyond fancy wrought iron gates to view inside private residential interiors and gardens of more than 150 of America's most distinctive historic houses in 12 colonial and antebellum neighborhoods.

Private Gardens in Charleston

The gentle breeze, magnified from the generosity of swaying palmetto trees, swirled scents of Jasmine in the air as we explored pristine private gardens. We found floral explosions of azaleas and wisteria spilling over fences on almost every block. Be sure to request the tour that includes a famous intimate "secret garden" within a garden. Open to the public, Waterfront Park is where you can sit around the pineapple fountain or the pier that offers old-fashioned porch swings to observe vessels bobbing in Charleston Harbor with Fort Sumter in the distance. For floating around the harbor, reserve a private charter to sail with the winds and tides at sunset on the Schooner Pride.

Waterfront Park

If you miss the Festival of Houses and Gardens, there are various house museums open to the public year round. Completed in 1808, the Nathaniel Russell House is recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. The house is furnished with period antiques and the free-flying staircase is amazing. The docent shared an interesting tidbit about a pre-nuptial agreement, 1800s style. The Russell House gardens are perfect for quiet moments, and you will want to sit on the Joggling Board (courting bench.) Also, enjoy the Aiken-Rhett House and its outbuildings that have survived as a time capsule since 1858, and the Heyward-Washington House which can boast that George Washington slept there.

Nathaniel Russell House

Nathaniel Russell House

The Battery is perfect for a stroll along the seawall where you can admire some of the most opulent historic mansions in Charleston. Tour the Edmondston-Alston House where an amazing 90 percent of the original furniture is still in the house, and the piazza provides views of Charleston Harbor. In 1861, the Alston family joined General P.G.T. Beauregard on the piazza to view the bombardment of Fort Sumter. Be sure to visit one of the most significant Colonial buildings in the country, The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon on East Bay Street.

The Battery

Mansion on the Battery

For shopping, start on King Street where dozens of stores are stocked with over-the-top antiques, china, silver and fine linens for your new home. If a rendition of old Charleston is more along your budget, visit Historic Charleston Reproductions on Broad Street. At the Shops at Charleston Place choose a memento of your honeymoon. Hint…can you say Gucci?

Art flourishes in Charleston. At the Gibbes Museum of Art, view Girl with Kitten, (1841) by Charles Fraser. The painting depicts Ruth Raymond with her kitten, Perdita. Both characters are in the 1840 novel entitled Love's Progress written by Caroline Gilman. The Gibbes Museum of Art displays one of the finest collections of American art in the Southeast. You can also purchase a painting for your new home at the numerous art galleries sprinkled throughout town.

A bounty of daily tours is available in Charleston, but one of the most unique is Gullah Tours. Gullah, the language spoken by the lowcountry's first African-American inhabitants, still thrives today in South Carolina. Alphonso Brown, fluent in Gullah, informs tourists from an air-conditioned tour bus. Highlights include Catfish Row, (inspired the opera Porgy and Bess), the famous iron gates crafted by Phillip Simmons, and Old City Market. If you dare, make reservations to wander Charleston after dark on a variety of ghost tours through cemeteries, the old jail, and the eerie Provost Dungeon, while guides spew tales of ghostly Charleston. For some of the most romantic spots in America, plan a day-trip to the Ashley River Plantations.

Middleton Place

Statue at Middleton Place

Less than 30 minutes from downtown Charleston, you will find Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation and Drayton Hall located along the Ashley River. Begin at Middleton Place, America's oldest landscaped Gardens. We found thousands of blooming azaleas along this majestic plantation. Tour the Middleton Place House (1775) where objects of the past are kept, including a document signed by Abraham Lincoln. Notice the herd of sheep leisurely grazing on the lawn. The nearby paths unfold into garden rooms where we walked the same footpaths, as did pre-Revolutionary statesmen. The film "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger was filmed in part here. For quiet moments, spend time relaxing under the branches of Middleton Oak where hundreds have exchanged vows, and stroll to the bridge at the Rice Mill Pond. The Butterfly Lakes and the Reflection Pool are also romantic spots. Experience African-American Focus Tours and Carriage Tours. At dusk, follow the path of fiery torches to dine at the Middleton Place Restaurant. Here in this candlelit atmosphere overlooking the gardens, enjoy Shrimp and Grits and Pecan Pie. 843-556-6020

The Long Bridge at Magnolia Plantation

Magnolia Plantation has been the original ancestral home of the Drayton family since 1676. Today the plantation is home to the eleventh generation of Draytons. Magnolia Plantation has been open to the public since 1872. We found gravel walkways leading to secret paths in America's oldest public garden. The gardens are designed in the romantic style that was popular in the 1800s. We found plenty of places for "alone time" amid the blooms and meandering paths. Visit the Plantation House, take the Nature Boat trip, and hold hands along Long Bridge.

Drayton Hall

Drayton Hall is an authentic plantation house c.1738 and is the finest example of Georgian Palladian architecture in the United States. It is also the oldest preserved plantation house in America that is open to the public. We enjoyed a picnic under the low-hanging branches of centuries-old live oaks. The stillness of the Marsh Walk, with its winding paths and foot bridges, begs for exploration. Walk to the Reflecting Pond, the Victorian Garden Mound and roam along the river-front path with its allee of blooming azaleas.

The fictional Charleston aristocrat Rhett Bulter from Gone with the Wind called Charleston a place where there is still a little grace and charm left in the world. I am convinced if Scarlett and Rhett could have honeymooned in Charleston today, their love story would have had a happier ending.

Weddings and Honeymoons in Barbados

5/23/2008 11:55:06 AM ~ Posted By Reprinted from ABC Dialogue Magazine

It will already, probably, be the greatest day of your life. But to truly add that wow factor, do it in Barbados.

The island has a long tradition of hosting the most memorable weddings anywhere in the world and is also a natural magnet for honeymooners.

Its lush, tropical setting and powder-fine sand, touched by crystal blue waters has defined destination weddings for years - its ability to satisfy both newlywed and honeymooner saves time and allows for a holiday experience out of this world.

Barbados offers lovers a full range of romantic escapes, with a host of fine hotels, resorts, villas and guest house accommodations. Experienced event planners can choose between a church wedding, a romantic beach wedding, or a more non-traditional venue. Decorations, transportation and many more details will be seamlessly coordinated for your special day while you relax.

Weddings can be conducted in an elegantly manicured garden, at an impressive villa, or on the decks of a sailing yacht. You can celebrate with champagne and hors d'oeuvres as you accept the congratulations of family and friends.

There are many professional bakeries and florists on the island to ensure that your day has every special touch. Individualized mini-cakes are a new trend in wedding favours, but the classic tiered great cake is also a popular option.

Sightseeing in Barbados offers a delightful diversity of attractions. Follow sandy beaches and turquoise Caribbean waters to the west, rugged coastline to the north, pounding Atlantic surf to the east, and grassy sugar cane fields surrounding historic "great house" plantations within. There also are quaint villages and cosmopolitan Bridgetown, museums and landmarks, and unparalleled sights amidst wildlife reserves, flowers forests, fields and gullies. Visitors are encouraged to arrange guided tours, either in advance or with their hotel concierge.

If private exploration is more your style, you can take an independent or self-guided tour, since meeting your island hosts face-to-face will allow you to learn the Barbados way of life, making special discoveries and finding your own perspective along the way.

Since Barbados recently adopted new laws eliminating advance notice requirements to marry there, couples can become man and wife in a day, and there is no minimum length of stay or residency requirement. Barbadian law allows an official marriage ceremony to take place as soon as a license is obtained. Its streamlined process removes waiting periods and facilitates no-hassle weddings.

Application for a marriage license must be made by both parties at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs where the following documents are required:

  • Valid passports or the original or certified copies of birth certificates.
  • If either party was divorced, an original decree absolute or a certified copy of the final judgement.
  • If either party was previously married and widowed, a certified copy of the marriage certificate and the deceased spouse's death certificate.

Dreaming of a Disney Wedding

7/16/2007 9:50:37 AM ~ Posted By Lisa Baldwin

What little girl ever went to Walt Disney World theme park in Orlando, Florida and didn’t want to grow up one day and be just like a real Princess that she met there? I know I did!

You know the story. You meet the Prince, fall in love, have the fairy tale wedding and live happily ever after.

Well in true Disney style, Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings is making that dream a reality. Since the first wedding at Disney’s Wedding Pavilion in 1995, more than 2,300 couples each year have tied the knot at Walt Disney World Resort. For these couples, dreams become reality.

Did you know that, at Walt Disney World, a bride could arrive for her wedding in Cinderella’s glass coach with the magical backdrop of the Cinderella Castle or have Mickey and Minnie greet and interact with guests at the reception?

You could have an elegant ball at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, a traditional ceremony at the Wedding Pavilion or a beach-themed wedding complete with tiki torches, leis and luau on one of the Walt Disney World white-sand beaches.

From magical musicians, fabulous florals and other creative additions such as a Renaissance costumed Major Domo who will act as your ring bearer and carry your rings down the aisle in a glass slipper. You can even light up your magical night by having your own private Disney fireworks display just for you and your guests!

Disney custom designs each wedding with the famous “Disney Difference” – and that means attention to the tiniest of details.

I found lots of information from Walt Disney World Wedding website! With a Walt Disney World wedding your guests will enjoy discounted room rates and discounted Walt Disney World theme park tickets.

Having an adult wedding? No Problem! Walt Disney World even offers child care for your event.

Disney has hosted such a wide variety of "themed" weddings--each of them different and unique. They have hosted Medieval weddings, Winter Wonderland Weddings, a "Mad Hatter's Tea Party" Wedding, "Beauty & the Beast" Ball Weddings, a "Hollywood Grandeur" Wedding, "Under the Sea Weddings" at the Living Seas Pavilion, a Native-American "Pocahontas" Wedding at Fort Wilderness and weddings in many of the countries around the World Showcase in Epcot®--to name just a few!

Many locations provide an "instant theme," such as the Living Seas Lounge at Epcot®, or any of the Epcot® Pavilions, including France, Japan, the Rose Garden in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada. Or how about a 1940s Americana theme with swing-dancing at Atlantic Dance at Disney's BoardWalk Resort or the ultimate Cinderella fantasy in the Magic Kingdom® Park? In the past, couples have created amazing themed environments including a fog-shrouded "Midsummer Night's Dream" enchanted forest, Cinderella's Ball, and even a "Winter Wonderland" complete with an "ice-skating pond" for a dance floor.

The possibilities are as endless as the imagination and no matter where your imagination takes you; the Disney wedding specialists are there to assist you with making your every dream come true.

Destination Wedding Etiquette - Bridal Showers: Can we have one? Who do we invite?

2/11/2007 10:19:35 AM ~ Posted By Lei Lydle

Today I received the following wedding etiquette question by email and it is an interesting one that I think a lot of brides probably run into with destination weddings being so popular these days. Here is the question:

Q. I have a friend getting married in Colorado. She is being told that she can invite people to her showers even though the wedding guest list is very limited....because it's a "destination" wedding. Is that right? (sounds right to me, but I just remember the old rule of "do not invite people to a shower if they are not invited to the wedding.")
So here's my answer. It may not be popular, but here goes...
A. With the exception of the "office shower" the old rule that you refer to, "do not invite people to a shower if they are not invited to the wedding", does hold true for destination weddings with a couple of exceptions:
  1. If you are having a very small destination wedding followed by a belated wedding reception after you return home AND you intend to invite the intended bridal shower guests to the belated reception, then you may invite them to the bridal shower. HOWEVER, you should send a "Save the Date" card for the belated reception FIRST. Only send the bridal shower invitation after you are certain that the Save the Date card has arrived so the intended guest doesn't feel awkward by thinking they have been invited to the shower but not the wedding.

Also if you do have a belated reception like this, it is a nice idea to show the wedding video or have have your photos on display so these guests can see what they are celebrating.

  2. If your friends, who KNOW they are not invited to the wedding, get together and decide to throw you a shower and THEY make up the guest list that is made up entirely of close friends that KNOW the deal (kind of like an office shower), then it is ok because the BRIDE really is not involved (again like an office shower).

12/30/2006 2:21:27 PM ~ Posted By Lei Lydle

by Linda Holloway, Holloway Photography

Like most little girls, Edith S. Dresser of Rhode Island probably dreamed of growing up to marry a handsome prince, being whisked away to his castle and …you know the rest of the story. Edith’s dreams became reality in 1898 when she married George W. Vanderbilt in Paris. Although George was not a prince, he was a member of the wealthy American Vanderbilt family. George brought his bride to the 250-room Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina, that he had built three years earlier. Designed like a French Renaissance Chateau, the National Historic Landmark is America’s largest home.

According to the Biltmore Estate archives, the newlyweds first journeyed up the estate’s Approach Road by private carriage, passing through an immense horseshoe of goldenrods bearing the legend “Good Luck” in bright flowers. The Biltmore band, stationed in the tea garden, played inspiring marches and cheering employees lined the drive to greet the couple. There were bonfires, refreshments, and brilliant illumination of the grounds until past midnight.

More than 100 years have passed, and the same spirit of hospitality is extended to newlyweds today at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. When William A.V. Cecil Jr., great-grandson of George Vanderbilt, surveyed the view from the crest of Antler Hill on Biltmore Estate, he knew that he had found the perfect spot to carry out his great-grandfather’s plan to build a hotel. The addition of the Inn in 2001 brought a Mobile Travel Guide Four-Star rating and Four Diamonds from AAA. Conde’ Nast Traveler listed it on their 2005 and 2006 Gold List, and the Inn made Travel + Leisure’s 500 World’s Best Hotels for 2006. The Inn was built in harmony with Biltmore House, complete with towers, balconies, and terraces.

The rooms feature fine furnishings with plush beds, luxurious baths and decor inspired by English and French Manor houses. The opulent “Cecil Suite,” featured in Conde Nast’s “Room With A View,” often doubles as the honeymoon suite. In the distance, you can catch a glimpse of the top of Biltmore House. You can choose to dine in your room or try the Dining Room with delectable cuisine, fancy china and crisp white tablecloths. Be sure to ask about the packages with a romance connection.

One of our favorite places at the Inn was the Veranda where rocking chairs are considered prime amenities. The slight tinkling of wind chimes was the only interruption of silence as the Inn’s guests surveyed one of America’s most majestic landscapes. Along the meadow, we witnessed a small wedding in the distance with the Blue Ridge Mountains and blue sky providing the backdrop. Even the guests on the Veranda applauded the newlyweds as they made their way back to the Inn for the wedding celebration.

On chilly mornings, the floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby and library areas of the Inn frame a spectacular mountain view. You will want to spend some time in the library sitting next to the massive twin fireplaces while a soothing melody from the black Baby Grand piano resonates throughout the room. The massive oil paintings are so surreal that it looks as if you could step into the painting and walk along the path that the artist created. But… there is more to do than daydream.

Plan a day outdoors and explore the romantic spots on Biltmore Estate. Request the concierge to arrange a lunch for you and plan a walk to the upper front lawn of Biltmore House. Picnic beneath the statue of Diana and enjoy the view of the Biltmore House that most people do not take the time to explore. Another off-the-beaten spot is the Boathouse on the Bass Pond Trail. This trail offers an optimal view of the rock bridge across the pond. While the landscape here may turn with the seasons, it is autumn’s fiery explosion of color that you will remember. For other outdoor activities, try hiking, biking, horseback riding, rafting or go off-road with the Land Rover Experience Driving School. Be sure to save time for a tour of the nation’s most-visited winery—Biltmore Winery. For lunch, stop off at The Bistro, adjacent to the winery, and sample their famous wood-fired pizzas.

Wake early for a trip to the Lagoon to view the layers of fog lift to uncover Biltmore House. Tour the house early when it is least crowded. Here, you can take a peek into the daily life of the Vanderbilts during the “Gilded Age” and have the opportunity to be part of it. George Vanderbilt filled the chateau with masterpieces by Renoir and Whistler, and a sampling of treasures from around the world.

You will tour the glassed-roofed Winter Garden where Cornelia Vanderbilt (Edith and George’s only child) and John Cecil had their wedding breakfast. In the Library, notice the ceiling painting, “The Chariot of Aurora.” It is comprised of 13 separate canvases and once hung in the Pisani Palace in Venice. A passage behind the mantel leads to the second floor, which provided easy access for guests to choose a book for bedtime reading. The Billiard Room is home to the most intriguing pieces of the Biltmore collection—an Empire walnut game table and ivory chess pieces owned and used by Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile on St. Helena Island between 1815 and 1821. If you have a spirit for adventure, schedule the Rooftop Tour that explores the roof at the top of the Grand Staircase. This tour allows guests to see the Observatory from the top down as you move around the wrought iron walkway to reach an exterior balcony where you will come face to face with the gargoyles. The panoramic view is spectacular!

For the most romantic experience of your honeymoon, pre-arrange a private carriage ride. You will need your camera for this occasion. The carriage driver, Jim, and his assistant, Rosie, could easily join the comedy circuit with their hilarious antics. First, Jim introduced us to Jake and Pat, a pair of magnificent Belgium draft horses. Jim related, “Honeymoon couples usually request that I make a photo of them in front of the carriage. When I was about to make a photo of one couple, I suggested to the bride ‘Why don’t you give him a big kiss?’ Why, she turned around and kissed Jake.”

Once you are settled in the carriage, it’s almost like Jim and Rosie are invisible. As we approached The Knoll, a deer bolted from the underbrush and wild turkeys wandered at will. Almost like magic, there it was—just like a scene out of a movie. The late afternoon sun splashed along the west side of Biltmore House—most believe the prettiest side. Jim and Rosie had delivered us to a place to view Biltmore House that can only be seen by private carriage or guided trail ride. Jim stopped long enough for us to snap a photograph for doubting friends and perhaps our grandchildren. Like any good love story, we rode off into the fading sunset, and, oh yes, the rest of the story—we are now living happily ever after.

I came across this article called "Top 10 Weddings of the Year" on the India Times Web site - it shows pictures and includes details of 10 celebrity weddings from 2006. Predictably, the wedding of Tom Cruise to Katie Holmes in Italy takes the number 1 spot.

Other celebrity weddings include Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson in St Tropez, Anna Nicole Smith and Howard K. Stern in the Bahamas, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban in Manly, Australia, and several others.

Planning a Wedding inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Plan to Pay a Fee

9/27/2006 11:13:25 AM ~ Posted By Lei Lydle

If you are planning a wedding or destination wedding to the Great Smoky Mountains, this blog entry is for you!

According to a recent AP article reprinted on Knoxville, Tennessee’s WBIR.com, on October 1, 2006, the Park Service is going to start charging a $50 non-refundable permit fee for weddings inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Additionally, businesses that put together wedding packages for use in the park will have to pay a fee. Here are two important facts from the article:

Businesses which put together wedding packages and want to use the park will pay for a $200 application fee and $10 per month during the 24-month life of the permit…

The ordained ministers of local area churches are exempt from the commercial use requirement, provided they don't perform more than four park weddings a year and don't advertise their services.
The article has more information so you may want to click over and read the actual article for more details AFTER you read the rest of this blog post because…

Something is glaringly missing from the article: it doesn’t tell couples and businesses how to go about getting one of these permits. I have done the research and here is what I found on the Great Smoky Mountains Web site:
Wedding and Special Event Permits
Weddings and other special events require a permit and must follow specific guidelines.

If you wish to hold your special event on the Tennessee side of the park, please call (865) 436-1266 for permit and regulation information. If you would like to hold the ceremony on the North Carolina side of the park, please contact (828) 497-1930.

Cruising is a popular honeymoon destination for many reasons. For one, honeymooners particularly like all-inclusive packages. In addition, the excellent service on cruise ships, non-stop activities and various ports of call all make cruising a relaxing way to celebrate your marriage.

If you are thinking of taking a cruise for your honeymoon, here are some tips:

  • Use a travel agent for the best deals.
  • Book as early as possible and remember, cabins can be small so get the largest room you can afford and specify the type of bed that you prefer.

Romance In The Mountains: The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa

10/27/2005 2:12:32 PM ~ Posted By Linda Holloway, Holloway Photography

by Linda Holloway, Holloway Photography

The Grove Park Inn

Try a honeymoon destination that rocks — literally, that is! The Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa in Asheville, North Carolina, opened in 1913 by an extraordinary feat of hundreds of mules, wagons, pulleys and ropes moving granite stones—some of them weighing as much as 10,000 pounds. Today, couples can still enjoy this opulent resort on Sunshine Mountain where romance is swirled around history and complimented by contemporary amenities.

The resort’s Grand Romance Package is popular with perks like a six-foot oversized effervescent bath. The six new Themed Rooms are also getting a lot of attention. Drift back to the Jazz Age, with The Gatsby, or better yet, inquire about reserving room 441 that has the F. Scott Fitzgerald connection. For a pad that is sure to make Austin Powers happy, try The Swinging 60s. Yes, you guessed it—complete with shag carpeting. Yeah, baby. The historic Main Inn rooms have original or replica pieces from the Arts & Crafts Era and are very nostalgic and boast the best view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Sunset Terrace at Chops

There is not a bad time of year to honeymoon at the resort, but when autumn’s palette “kicks it up a notch,” October is hard to beat. My husband and I entered our room, dropped the luggage, flung open the drapes and were amazed at why management bothered buying artwork. The most spellbinding décor is provided just beyond the room—compliments of Mother Nature.

For romantic dining without leaving the property, try the resort’s Chops and Horizons restaurants. Weather permitting, make reservations to dine on Sunset Terrace at Chops featuring outstanding steak and seafood. Also, put on your most elegant attire at least one night for the richly intimate atmosphere of Horizons. For casual dining, combined with breathtaking views, enjoy the Blue Ridge Dinning Room.

After dinner, step into the Great Hall and walk in the footsteps of legends of the past. Guests in the early years included William Jennings Bryan, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, along with eight presidents. The Inn was dedicated to providing its guests with a relaxing refuge from the outside world, (a concept that is in step with the current philosophy). First, claim two rocking chairs in front of the massive fireplaces flanked on each end of the room. When the natural glow begins to dim—not to worry, a bellman is ready to step into the fourteen-foot fireplace to stoke the fading flames. Wait patiently for guests to diminish. Here, you can plan your entire future!

To take the edge off of months of pre-wedding stress, make a reservation at the resort’s 40,000 square foot, subterranean haven, The Spa. According to the annual “World’s Best” poll taken by Travel + Leisure magazine, it is the third straight year the facility has placed among the top 20 in the United States and Canada. For the ultimate in relaxation, try The Spa’s Couples Retreat that includes side-by-side massage followed by an aromatic bubble bath surrounded by candles and rose petals. Enjoy the sound of the two dramatic waterfalls that frame The Spa’s grotto pool area. Float away the hours in the lap pool while gazing at thousands of fiber optic stars in the rocks overhead.

The Spa

The next morning, discover Asheville’s stately icon, the Biltmore Estate. America’s largest home, the 250-room Biltmore House has welcomed guests since 1895 when George Vanderbilt opened his private residence to family on Christmas Eve. For the adventurous couple, try the Roof Top Tour where you can come face to face with the home’s Gargoyles. Check out the view from the west balcony, the site of numerous wedding proposals, and explore the intimate places in the 250 acres of gardens and grounds. A carriage ride through the forest and fields is a must.

Lake Lure

Take a hint from Hollywood and discover the romance of Asheville. Nearby Lake Lure is where Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey danced their way to stardom while making the 80s hit, Dirty Dancing. The Last of the Mohicans, was shot exclusively in the mountains around Asheville, including the magnificent waterfall scenes that were filmed in the Chimney Rock Park. Hike to the park’s Hickory Nut Falls that was made famous in the movie. While cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway, stop by milepost 411.9 and view the real Cold Mountain in the distance. Cold Mountain became one of the most famous peaks in America after the book and film by the same name was released.

Room 441

Before leaving the Grove Park Inn, board the elevators that are cleverly hidden in the chimneys of the massive Great Hall fireplaces. Original to the Main Inn, the elevators continue to transport guests today. If you did not reserve the infamous room number 441, at least stop on the 4th floor and walk by the room of the Inn’s most notable and sometimes notorious literary guest. It is here where F. Scott Fitzgerald resided after he rose to fame after the success of his great literary work, The Great Gatsby.

Once crowned as the “Chronicler of the Jazz Age,” Fitzgerald lived at the Inn during 1935 and returned in the summer of 1936. It is the mystique of bygone days that evokes romance around every corner in the historic Grove Park Inn.

A Honeymoon Haven in a “Perfect” Beach Town

5/16/2005 1:51:02 PM ~ Posted By Lei Lydle

Seaside, Florida

Seaside, Florida

by Linda Holloway, Holloway Photography

Begin your first days as Mr. and Mrs. with a ride along scenic road 30-A. This stretch of road hugs the pristine shores of the Northwest Florida Panhandle and delivers you to the beach retreat – Seaside. Time Magazine acclaimed Seaside as “the most astounding design achievement of its era,” and it is also a romantic destination for newlyweds. The “perfect” tiny town features cottage homes painted in pastel colors adorned with white picket fences along brick-paved streets. A place so perfect, in fact, that in 1996 filmmakers abandoned the Hollywood stage lots and headed straight to Seaside to film the Jim Carrey flick “The Truman Show.” Today, couples can still enjoy a stroll down Natchez Street to view the famous Truman House.

Seaside has a bounty of amenities including six tennis courts and three pools. Recall an earlier era and enjoy a round of croquet on one of the best courts in the Southeast. Sailing on the high seas is an option and kayaking is available in nearby Western Lake. With over 275 rental cottages to choose from, it is the two-storied beachfront honeymoon cottages that offer couples the most privacy.

Seaside, Florida

Our cottage featured white, wooden walls with contrasting pine floors. Downstairs, we found an expansive shower for two, and a step from the bedroom is a screened porch decorated with a huge Jacuzzi as the centerpiece. The dunes hug the porch, but for ultimate seclusion, untie the canvas curtains and forget about the outside world. As we ventured upstairs to the living area, the stark brightness gave way to an almost 360 degree panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico where the porch is appropriately furnished with a hammock for two. Here, you can watch the fiery sun melt into the gulf for an unforgettable experience. When you decide to venture outside, the cottages come complete with transportation – two yellow bicycles.

Seaside, Florida
Seaside, Florida

Along the shoreline are nine beach pavilions that serve as gateways to the acclaimed emerald surf and powdered-sugar white sand that is composed mainly of pure quartz crystal, unlike anywhere else in the world. Wake up at least one morning at dawn when the sun welcomes you to a day where pre-wedding stress is transferred to peace and serenity along the beach. Come night, dance under the stars with the ocean’s mist blowing gently across your face in the moonlight. Hold hands where the surf unfurls at your feet – now close your eyes and imagine the ocean is actually surrendering a thunderous applause celebrating your marriage.

Seaside, Florida

For a romantic dining experience try Seaside’s acclaimed Bud & Alley’s Waterfront Restaurant. Voted as one of Florida’s top restaurants, the establishment serves up locally harvested seafood with a combination of the rustic cooking styles of Old Florida Tuscany and the Coastal South. Try the legendary Seaside Shrimp. Also, participate in the nightly tradition of “Ringing of The Sunset Bell,” on the waterfront deck. For a touch of the Caribbean, dine at Criolla’s Restaurant at nearby Grayton Beach. Florida Trend has claimed Criolla’s as “One of Forida’s Top Twenty Restaurants.” Ask for a corner table, where the flickering tealight candles add ambiance. Be sure and try Jungle Chicken and Aunt Irma’s Banana & Pecan Beignets. The restaurant is also the caterer of the numerous weddings and events at Seaside.

Seaside’s “walk-to-anywhere” design is great for exploring the local shops. Just steps from the honeymoon cottages is the open-air Perspicacity, where cabanas display trendy fashions and accessories. The Seaside Store is where you can stock up on logo shirts, beach towels and hats, and take advantage of all of the unique shops of Seaside to buy a gift for your new home. Also, if you are missing your furry friends that you left behind, not a problem, some shops come complete with friendly greeters that you can pet.

While browsing for unusual blown-glass sculptures at Fusion Art Glass, meet Buddy the cat. The orange Tabby alternates between “door duty” and napping on the porch. Toward the town’s common “green” area, you will want to visit J. Proctor Gallery for an array of paintings and sculptures. Here, you will find Gulliver, a pure white Maltese canine with his own fan club. Finally, the greeter scampering among the art and pottery at the Round Tree Pottery Gallery is a long-haired Chihuahua, Itsy Bitsy.

Seaside, Florida

On your last day at Seaside, request the activity planner to pack you a lunch and drive to nearby Eden State Gardens. The centerpiece of Eden is the Wesley Mansion, a renovated Greek Revival-style home. Surrounded by remote paths amidst manicured gardens and a reflecting pool, the grounds are perfect for an intimate picnic. The gigantic live oaks draped in Spanish moss capture sentimental whispers and promises proclaimed on a honeymoon as unique as your love.

Far From The Maddening Crowd

The Honeymoon
The Sanctuary
Kiawah Island, South Carolina

by Linda Holloway, Holloway Photography

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island

Thirty minutes from Charleston, South Carolina, and a world away from the ordinary – The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island offers couples romance in an intimate setting. At first glimpse, the narrow road leading to the Barrier Island is typical until the massive live oak trees come into full view. The sun suddenly dims and dancing streaks of light compete to squeeze through the sprawling branches forming a canopy. The road leads you to one of the most remote yet luxurious resorts to be built on the East Coast in 20 years.

Front View of The Sanctuary at Dawn

The Sanctuary - appropriately named, is owned by the crown jewel of resorts, Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The 255-room, $125 million hotel is a perfect haven for couples that are ready to de-stress after months of wedding planning. Reviews and accolades are pouring in since the grand opening in August 2004, and Elite Traveler named it “Best New Resort.”

The hotel is designed to resemble a stately Southern seaside mansion where the staff dispenses hospitality in grand style. The spectacular ocean view from the lobby was by design with the developers transporting a quarter million tons of dirt to raise the lobby’s level to 20 feet above the Atlantic -- a view you will not see anywhere on the East Coast. Attention to the theme was emulated to the level that the wood-planked floors of the lobby creek like an old mansion.

Front View of The Sanctuary at Dawn

The view is the beginning of a special rendezvous with the sights and sounds of nature that only Kiawah Island can provide. Escape from the lobby to your spacious room where the luxury reigns as you experience the honeymoon of your dreams. Our room was designed with two balconies that are perfect for ordering room service, combining the best of scenery and privacy. On a mild day, unfold the plantation shutters in the large bath, swing open the double French doors leading to the balconies and experience the most relaxing sound on earth -- ocean pounding land. Yes, you can have an ocean view while soaking. Slumber time finds you enveloped in ultra fine linens embellishing the hand-carved wooden bed.

Room Interior of The Sanctuary

When it is time to play, the amenities are unlimited with swimming, canoeing, kayaking and biking. There is also tennis and golf to keep you entertained. It’s no surprise that Conde Nast Traveler’s readers have voted Kiawah Island among the “Top 20” Islands in the World for resort activities. Slow down at the end of the day long enough to visit Mingo Point to witness the sunset over the marshes.

Kayaking at Mingo Point
Sunset at Mingo Point

Avid bikers can request a picnic lunch and head to Marsh Island on the residential side of Kiawah. Beginning along a path surrounded by thick Palmetto trees, suddenly you feel like kids on an adventure. Park the bikes at the bridge and walk until you spy a tall wooden tower. Just before you arrive at the top of the tower, there is a bench to gaze out onto the marshes.

We enjoyed the silence surrounding the tower where the water had already crept back into the ocean when we had arrived. The only interruption came from a pair of egrets making an impromptu flight across the marsh to a nearby mini island. Another audible was a clicking sound made by the numerous Fiddler crabs that are active during the low tide when the mud flats are exposed. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery for a perfect moment in time for “memory keeping.”

Experience the Spa at The Sanctuary that features couples’ spa suite facilities with a Southern twist. A spa treatment is a great way to relax before an evening of romantic dining. The Ocean Room is the ultimate in fine dining and features a pair of unique sofa seats, delectable food and a large ocean view terrace. The private wine room is also an escape for romantic dining. For lunch, dine at the Jasmine Porch restaurant and try the Southern standby -- fried green tomatoes.

Do not leave without “flowing” down the two grand staircases flanked by stunning 30-foot-high murals depicting the area’s nature scenes. You can almost imagine if Rhett and Scarlet had an opportunity to visit the Sanctuary, the novel may have had a happier ending.

To complete your perfect honeymoon, travel 25 miles to spend time in one of America’s most romantic cities, Charleston, South Carolina. Stroll on cobblestone streets and catch a horse-drawn carriage to tour the city under gas lit lanterns. The historic Rutledge House Inn is a good choice for historic accommodations. Choose from fine dining at Circa 1886 restaurant or view the city from atop the casual Terrace Restaurant for a lasting romantic experience. Kiawah Island and Charleston are a great combination for celebrating the beginning of your new life.

Weddings Afloat: All About Having A Wedding on a Cruise

8/13/2002 ~ Posted By Alisa Bittner

An interesting and popular option for your wedding is to have it on a cruise ship. Thanks to Paula Stephens at The Cruise Authority (www.thecruiseauthority.com), I now have a general understanding of this unique option. Paula knows everything about cruise weddings.

We spent a couple of hours together and I was amazed at what I learned. Many couples are choosing to "combine" their wedding and honeymoon into one event. Some go with and some go without guests. A wedding on a cruise ship becomes a wedding event, and not a wedding day. There are various approaches to a wedding aboard a cruise ship. Below are some of the basic things to know and think about if you are considering a wedding "at sea."

The Legalities of Marrying "At Sea"

Well, the "at sea" idea is one of the fist things to know about. You usually don't get married while the ship is sailing. Unless a ship has a special license, a lawful wedding cannot happen in international waters, so the weddings occur on ship, but in port. Princess Cruises can handle weddings while sailing on some of their ships . In general, a legally recognized wedding by the US of A must happen in the United States or a U.S. territory. For example, if you wish to get married on a Caribbean cruise, you'll need to get married at one of the U.S. ports, such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Tampa before the cruise ship sails off to the Islands.

It is also possible to get married in ports such as U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. If you are not concerned about you marriage being recognized in the U.S., you can get married in other ports, but you must abide by those ports laws. For example, you must be in Aruba for 24 hours before they will allow you to get married there. The good news is, you can just call your travel agent and they will help you with all the options. Just make sure they've handled lots of weddings. Some people get married by their local Justice of the Peace and choose any port they want for the "public" ceremony for friends and family. Which leads me to my next point...

Let The Cruise Line Handle The Planning

If you want a great wedding, but do not want to go through the hassles of planning every last detail, a wedding aboard a cruise ship may be something to consider. You won't need to run around finding wedding companies because the cruise line can handle everything. Your choices are simply A, B or C. Many options are determined for you based on the size of your wedding party, date, available space, etc.

This is such a great service because, for example, you don't have to look at five receptions sites, you just need to choose from a menu. You don't have to visit multiple florists, just pick a color for your floral decorations. Most cruise lines offer several packages that include everything from the ceremony, food, flowers, photographer, videographer, cake, entertainment, cocktail parties and so on. Many ships have a beautiful Chapel available for your wedding. There are numerous cakes of all shapes and sizes to choose from. (If you want total control and endless choices over every aspect of the ceremony and reception, a wedding on a cruise ship may not be for you.)

Book The Cruise Wedding 8 to 12 Months in Advance

Although the cruise lines will handle everything for you, you still need to plan as far in advance as possible. In general, the larger the wedding party the further in advance you'll want to plan. You'll want to book space with the cruise line about eight months to a year in advance if you want more choices such as ceremony time, location on ship, cabins and so on. If you have a very small wedding party or it's just the two of you, then timing is not as critical.

All of the cruise lines will provide a wedding coordinator. Initially you will work with your travel agent who will help you find the right cruise line and ship, then handle the booking of all of the cabins. You will be assigned a wedding coordinator from the cruise line who will explain all of the options available and handle all of the wedding details for you (included in package). The agent can work with your guests directly to book their cabins. Often, a form is sent to the guests that they fill out and send in to the travel agent with all of their travel needs.

How Much Does It Cost?

Prices of weddings are affected by the size of the party and the type of reception. One great savings by having a wedding on a cruise ship is that all of the other meals are included in the price of the cruise. So your guests' meals, other than the reception, will be included in the price of their cabin.

A Few More Facts

Following are few more facts that may help you plan your wedding at sea:

  • Your wedding party can sail along with you after the wedding OR they can be escorted off the ship after the wedding. Weddings occur in every configuration from just the wedding couple sailing to everyone or a portion of the wedding party staying for the entire cruise.
  • Photographers and videographers are available by the cruise lines, however you can choose to have your own photographer instead. One thing to consider is that the ships photographers are very familiar with the best locations for pictures.
  • Tuxes can be rented onboard the ship. Measurements are sent in ahead for sizing.
  • Ceremonies typically do not occur on deck, but rather a private party room or in the chapel on the ship.
  • If you fly to the port, you'll want to arrive one day ahead of time because of possible flight delays or traffic on the wedding day.
