When choosing your wedding invitations and stationery, you may run into some terms that you are not familiar with.
For this reason we have compiled a list of terms and explanations:
At Home Cards These cards inform friends of your new address.
Calligraphy This is an elegant old italic script which can now be used for the invitations as well as the envelopes thanks to computerized calligraphy machines. The process is slower than the others but much faster than hand-done calligraphy.
Ceremony Cards These cards are enclosed when a select number of guests are invited to the ceremony in addition to the reception, to which all guests are invited.
Ceremony Program Lists the order of the wedding ceremony including the songs, prayers, names of attendants and musicians.
Engraved Invitations These are the most traditional, formal and expensive of all invitations. The paper is pressed onto a metal plate causing the letters to be slightly raised on the paper.
Envelope Linings Small pieces of tissue paper that add a special touch to formal invitations.
Informals Informal stationery is used mainly as thank-you notes, usually blank cards with your names printed on the outside.
Maps These are small, printed maps with directions to the ceremony and/or reception site to aid guests in finding the location.
Offset Printing This is the standard printing process where the ink lays flat on the paper. This process is less formal and generally less expensive.
Pew Cards These cards are mainly used in large, formal weddings to indicate special seating assignments.
Rain Cards These cards inform guests of an alternate location in the case of rain at an outdoor wedding.
Reception Cards These cards announce to the guest the location and time of the actual reception. These are used when only a select number of guests invited to the ceremony are also invited to the reception.
Response Cards These are the cards that asks guests to tell you whether or not they will attend the wedding. A preprinted return address envelope with a stamp is included to encourage guests to respond.
Return Address Your return address should be printed on the back flap of the envelopes.
Thank-You Notes These are small folded cards used to express thanks for gifts.
Thermography This is the most popular choice for invitations today. The process fuses ink and powder together on the paper to create raised letters that resemble engraving. Much less expensive than engraving.
Travel Cards This card is used to inform guests of any special wedding day transportation that you have arranged.
Weekend Wedding Program Informs guests of the many activities scheduled for the weekend and indicates the appropriate attire for each event. This program includes information on lodging arrangements you have made.
